ITM Power logo

Overview

ITM Power, headquartered in Sheffield, is a global leader in producing green hydrogen through its advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers. In 2021, the company launched its groundbreaking Gigafactory at Bessemer Park, the world’s largest electrolyser production facility, with an annual capacity of 1 GW. This facility showcases ITM Power’s commitment to decarbonisation and clean energy innovation.

The Sheffield site capitalises on the city’s industrial heritage and skilled workforce, supporting partnerships with major companies like Linde and Shell. ITM Power’s technology plays a key role in powering mobility, industrial processes, and energy storage solutions.

By advancing hydrogen production and driving costs down, ITM Power contributes to the UK’s net-zero goals and strengthens its global leadership in the green hydrogen sector.

  • £55 million construction cost
  • 134,000 sq ft
  • 1GW annual capacity
  • Worlds largest electrolyser production facility

Our Role

BWB was integral to the successful delivery of ITM Power's facility by providing Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) and energy consultancy services throughout the project lifecycle.

Initially, our team offered expert advice to ensure the base build met ITM Power’s rigorous requirements, identifying opportunities for efficiency and aligning the design with the project’s technical demands.

During the detailed fit-out phase, we tailored solutions to accommodate the unique industrial needs of the hydrogen electrolyser production process. This included complex systems for above-ground drainage, advanced heating and cooling technologies, and precision installations such as ducted ventilation and laboratory piping for gases like hydrogen, argon, and helium.

Our holistic approach also encompassed safety-critical systems such as hydrogen gas monitoring and oxygen depletion alarms, ensuring regulatory compliance and operational security. By collaborating closely with ITM Power, we ensured the facility met its operational targets while embracing innovation and sustainability.

Challenges

The scale and complexity of ITM Power's fit-out presented challenges, particularly in integrating specialised systems within the base build. Ensuring the compatibility of laboratory-grade utilities, such as piped gases and de-ionised water systems, required precision engineering and a collaborative approach across multiple stakeholders.

BWB’s proactive problem-solving, coupled with expertise in MEP systems, ensured seamless delivery. The client benefitted from our ability to anticipate potential issues, reduce risks, and maintain a streamlined project schedule, all while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety.

Value

Social Value

The facility delivers a transformative impact on the Sheffield region, boosting local employment and advancing the UK's green energy agenda. ITM Power’s operations contribute to the decarbonisation of industries, promoting sustainable practices and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Additionally, the project fosters skill development in cutting-edge energy technologies, empowering a future-ready workforce and positioning Sheffield as a hub for sustainable innovation.

Sustainability

BWB's input ensured energy-efficient design and systems, such as heat recovery ventilation and optimised power distribution, minimising the facility’s environmental footprint. By supporting hydrogen technology, the project aligns with global efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, demonstrating how innovative engineering can drive sustainability in practice.
