Overview
The Radlett Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) is located at the former Radlett Aerodrome in Hertfordshire. This project spans 1,035 acres and will deliver 3.6 million square feet of logistics space alongside a rail freight terminal, connecting to the Midland Mainline (MML).
The SRFI will facilitate the efficient movement of goods across the UK, reducing reliance on road transport and contributing to a modal shift towards rail freight, which helps meet the UK's carbon reduction goals. The project is designed to remove up to 76 heavy goods vehicle (HGV) journeys per train, thus reducing congestion and emissions.
The project includes the construction of an underpass, overhead line equipment, and rail infrastructure. It also features significant sustainability measures, such as creating a 610-acre country park with recreational facilities, footpaths, and planting over 132,000 saplings.
The development is expected to generate around 4,000 jobs during operation and 500 more during construction, boosting the local economy.
Our Role
We're proud to play a key role in this transformative project, offering a full suite of services throughout its lifecycle. Our expertise has been instrumental in addressing the complexities of developing a rail freight interchange on a brownfield site. This includes minimising environmental impact and maximising community benefits.
Leading design
Our team has been the principal designer for Areas 1 and 2, delivering industry-leading designs and insights, using our experience and expertise from working on all SRFIs across England. Our designs have been integral to the project, with the most recent accomplishment being the installation of the jack box, which was delivered ahead of schedule.
Integrated services
The project involved a wide range of services and teams, highlighting our unique ability to deliver integrated services across the company. These services included civil and structural engineering, drainage design and earthworks. We continue to provide these services for the development, working closely internally and externally to enable the project's success.
Rail excellence
Our internal rail team have also been involved in the project, delivering their expertise in SRFI to design tracks and signalling for Radlett. These designs are critical to the completion and suitability of the development, as they enable its full functionality.
