Client: The University of York
Project overview
Formerly the Smith and Nephew building, the York Management School & Department of Social Policy & Social Work is known as the Church Lane building. Re-envisioned as a modern facility, it's in the perfect location to link the East and West parts of campus.
Designed as a new home for the growing School, the project provided an ideal opportunity to bring two disciplines together to explore and work alongside each other in close partnership.
The modern, light-filled building features bespoke teaching and learning spaces and is also home to the Link Café, providing indoor and outdoor seating - for students and staff to enjoy well-deserved downtime.
With additional permit parking spaces on site, there are several Electric Vehicle charging points and bike storage.
Work started on site in the Autumn of 2019, with the building opening to students for the 2021/22 academic year.

BWB's role
Collaborative engineering solutions
We delivered a range of services, working collaboratively with the client and broader design team. This included providing structural surveys of the existing building to understand the built form and load capacities, drainage strategies and environmental consulting services.
Client-centric approach
Initially investigating the existing building and site, we ensured that the client's aspirations were met, including providing open and clean teaching and breakout spaces for staff and students using the facilities.
Refurbishing to reduce CO2e
Using current buildings differently is essential to lowering our effect on the environment. Refurbishing this facility rather than building a new facility prevented more than 900 tonnes CO2e.
