BWB Consulting Announces the Appointment of Ian Gardner as Head of Geotechnics

BWB is excited to announce the appointment of Ian Gardner as Head of Geotechnics. Ian will lead the Geotechnics team, bringing with him vast experience.

Ian, formerly of Hydrock, has successfully overseen numerous major projects in logistics, residential, energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing, developing solutions that significantly reduce groundwork risks and expedite project timelines through creative treatment strategies.

Some highlights of Ian’s career include East Midlands Gateway, Coventry Gateway, Northampton Gateway and more, further strengthening our expertise and market-leading position in Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges (SRFI’s).

In addition to this, Ian formed part of the team which drafted Chapter 4.6 of the NHBC standards, detailing the requirements for earthworks and geotechnical design.

This significant addition to our senior leadership team highlights our commitment to providing exceptional value to clients through innovative and commercially viable solutions.

Greg Nicholson, Executive Director at BWB, said this about Ian’s appointment:

“Ian is well-known for his skills in minimising costs and accelerating project timelines, making him a valuable addition to our business.

“His extensive knowledge of ground conditions and their effects on the built environment will be crucial in delivering solutions that save both time and money for our clients. Furthermore, Ian’s strong commercial acumen and innovative mindset will ensure that our projects are cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally responsible.”

In his new role, Ian will offer subject matter expertise and peer review for some of our most challenging projects. He will also be involved in rigorously assessing assumptions, embracing innovation and identifying opportunities to improve the quality of design. The role is to operate across all divisions within BWB, ensuring continuity of service offering related to all geotechnical aspects.

The appointment of Ian will strengthen our Geotechnics team, further enhancing the expertise of our current team, and further solidifying BWB Consulting’s status as a leader in geotechnical engineering design.

BWB’s expertise in Geotechnical Design

Geotechnical engineering design is fundamental in the creation of sustainable infrastructure that will benefit communities, enhance transport links, and support commercial projects. By thoroughly understanding the intricacies of ground conditions and leveraging advanced proprietary software like Plaxis 3D for finite element modelling, we enable our clients to navigate the challenges presented by complex sites and contribute to delivering some of the UK’s most notable projects.

Our geotechnical engineers are well-known for their ability to integrate across various technical engineering disciplines. This collaborative approach enables us to deliver comprehensive, commercially viable, and sustainable solutions for a wide range of projects, ranging from large-scale remediation schemes to more straightforward foundation designs.

Our expertise lies in helping contractors gain a competitive edge through innovative ground solutions. Whether it’s by utilising earthwork materials in novel ways or employing specific ground improvement techniques, we never simply repeat past solutions.

We are committed to achieving sustainable outcomes by minimising waste, reducing material usage, and lowering unnecessary carbon emissions. This overarching strategy enhances the viability of development sites for our clients.
