Driving the future of sustainable logistics at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett

We are proud to be at the forefront of one of the UK’s most ambitious logistics infrastructure projects – SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett. This transformative development is set to redefine freight distribution in the UK, promoting a more sustainable, efficient, and integrated approach to logistics.

A game-changer for UK logistics

Strategically located at the former Radlett Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, the SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett spans an impressive c.1,000 acres. This state-of-the-art facility will deliver 335,000 sqm of modern logistics space, enabled by a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) on site connected to the Midland Main Line.

The project is designed to facilitate a major shift from road to rail freight, significantly reducing carbon emissions and congestion on the UK’s road network. With each freight train capable of removing up to 76 lorries from the roads, this SRFI represents a critical step towards a greener, more sustainable supply chain.

Sustainable Development & Environmental Commitment

Sustainability is at the core of SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett. The project includes the creation of a 600-acre country park featuring:

  • 200 acres of new mixed-species woodland
  • 400 acres designated for conservation grazing
  • Over 4,288 standard trees, 132,057 whips planted
  • 17 kilometres of new footpaths, bridleways, and multi-use trails

This ambitious green initiative enhances biodiversity and provides valuable recreational space for the local community.

Economic & Social Impact

Upon completion, SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett is expected to generate approximately 4,000 jobs, boosting regional employment opportunities. During the build phase, an additional 500 construction jobs will be created, providing a significant economic uplift for the local area.

Our Role as Lead Engineering Consultant

BWB was brought into this highly complex project as the Lead Engineering Consultant, responsible for delivering the detailed design of the on-site enabling earthworks and infrastructure. SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett will support circa 3.5 million sq ft of state-of-the-art logistics and distribution space, including a dedicated rail-freight hub.

This is the third SRFI project that our client, SEGRO, has entrusted to BWB, following successful collaborations on East Midlands Gateway and Northampton Gateway at M1 Junctions 24 and 15. Our expertise in delivering nationally significant rail-served logistics infrastructure has positioned us as a key player in shaping the future of the UK freight movement.

A Critical Engineering Feat – The Jacked Box Installation

One of the project’s most technically challenging and time-sensitive aspects was installing a jacked box pre-cast concrete underbridge beneath the Midland Main Line. This structure is crucial to providing direct rail access for the strategic rail freight interchange.

Despite an accelerated programme, requested by Network Rail to be completed four months ahead of schedule, we successfully delivered the approved designs on programme and without incident during an eight-day blockade over Christmas 2024. The procedure involved:

  • Removal of a 60-metre track section and excavating 12,500 cubic metres of material from a 19th-century rail embankment.
  • Precision hydraulic jacking to install a 6,000-tonne pre-cast concrete structure at a controlled rate of 4 metres per hour.
  • Reinstating the track and ensuring full operational integrity of this critical section of the National Rail Network.

BWB worked alongside specialist sub-consultant Tony Gee & Partners, who were instrumental in designing the complex bridge and rail embankment works, while Volker Fitzpatrick led the construction effort.

The outstanding teamwork and technical expertise demonstrated throughout the planning, design, and construction process were widely recognised as best in class’, with Network Rail and other key stakeholders commending the delivery team’s efficiency and precision.

Setting the standard for future SRFIs

Having worked on all 11 ‘live’ SRFI sites in England, we are the market leader in delivering Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges. Our portfolio includes major projects like East Midlands Gateway, a £500 million logistics park that has created over 7,000 jobs and features a 50-acre SRFI capable of handling sixteen 775m freight trains per day.

With SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett, we are once again setting the standard for sustainable, high-impact logistics infrastructure. Our commitment to innovative design, meticulous planning, and sustainable development ensures this project will serve as a model for future SRFIs across the UK.

Looking ahead

With the successful completion of the underbridge installation, our focus now turns to delivering the on-site enabling earthworks and critical infrastructure. This next phase will facilitate the construction of rail-served logistics and distribution warehouses, further strengthening the UK’s shift towards sustainable freight solutions.

As construction progresses, we remain committed to delivering engineering excellence while balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to drive forward the future of sustainable logistics at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett.
