Ground broken at Siemens Mobility £100 million manufacturing and development hub in Chippenham

Construction has started on Siemens Mobility’s exciting £100 million facility in Chippenham, set to be complete in 2026. This project aims to significantly influence the future of rail technology in the UK. BWB is proud to be part of the project as the Civil and Structural Engineer, bringing our engineering design expertise to this state-of-the-art manufacturing, digital engineering, and research and development hub.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy and Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson attended the ground-breaking ceremony, marking a significant milestone for the project. The event also welcomed past Siemens Mobility employees, some with family connections to the company stretching back over a century, alongside local community members and school children.

BWB is crucial in delivering this cutting-edge facility, collaborating closely with Siemens Mobility, main contractor Bowmer + Kirkland and AHR Architects. Our team’s experience ensures the design aligns with the project’s ambitious goals, supporting the development and production of next-generation rail signalling and control systems for both UK and global markets.

Located at the Southpoint Business Park, the facility will provide a workplace for around 800 employees. Siemens Hub is being built to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards. This includes energy-efficient production areas, eco-friendly office spaces, and initiatives to enhance local biodiversity. An increase in green space and new wildlife habitats will be utilised to achieve this.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy highlighted the project’s importance:

“This £100million investment will bring a huge amount of opportunity… modernising our infrastructure and meaning better services for millions of passengers.” He also noted the significant job creation, offering rewarding careers in the railway industry.

Rob Morris, Joint CEO at Siemens Mobility, added,

“This investment reinforces our commitment to driving innovation in rail technology and transforming rail travel.”

BWB is excited to contribute to a project that will boost the local economy. The project also promises substantial advancements in sustainable rail technology and infrastructure across the UK.
